Monkeypox: Educate your Farm Employees
Kaitlyn Lutz, VMD, Bilingual Dairy Management Specialist
Northwest New York Dairy, Livestock & Field Crops
Although we are still all dealing with and trying to recover from a global pandemic, we now need to be aware of a new disease emerging throughout the USA: Monkeypox. The Center for Disease Control has guidance for how to prevent and manage outbreaks of monkeypox, or la viruela sÃmica o viruela del mono in Spanish. Since the disease is spread through close contact (to the rash, respiratory secretions or contaminated fabric like clothing, towels etc.), communal housing is a risk. In fact, the CDC specifically mentions seasonal worker housing as a risk and offers guidance for congregate housing management. We have made a flyer, in English and Spanish, for you to use to communicate signs, symptoms and preventive measures with your farm employees.
